Do you have any good resources for home-based businesses and the self-employed that you'd like to share? If so, this the place. Feel free to jump in with any suggestions that would be useful for self-employed and home business operations.
I'll start with one of my favorites: Vistaprint.com. I first ordered their free business cards several years ago, which were free and all I had to pay was a few dollars for shipping, maybe $4 or $5. They came with advertising on the backside for vistaprint.com, which is why they were free. But after that initial order, they continually sent me special offers via email, including their premium business cards (without their advertising) for free. I bit, and after that I was hooked for good, and frequently order promotional printed products including t-shirts, caps, pens, postcards, refrigerator magnets, and more. It's very easy to use their design templates to create professional-looking products, or you can upload your own logos and designs.
Overall, I think their pricing and ease of designing and ordering products online are an exceptional value for small business owners. |

Another GREAT resource for small business owners is SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business". You can receive free advice online or face-to-face. I used the free Online Mentor service about three years to ask a question about structuring several different businesses under one legal entity. I got a response within one day, and it probably saved me at least $100-$150 if instead I had consulted an attorney for the same issue!
SCORE was an acronym for Service Corps of Retired Executives, but they apparently dropped the acronym because many of the SCORE volunteers are still working, or only semi-retired.
| Quote: | SCORE "Counselors to America's Small Business" is a nonprofit association dedicated to educating entrepreneurs and the formation, growth and success of small business nationwide. SCORE is a resource partner with the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA).
SCORE is headquartered in Herndon, VA and Washington, DC and has 389 chapters throughout the United States and its territories, with 10,500 volunteers nationwide. Both working and retired executives and business owners donate time and expertise as business counselors. SCORE was founded in 1964.

Find your nearest SCORE at

The Knoxville (Tenn.) chapter has produced a CD which is available at our Oak Ridge Public Library, which has a special section for small business books. We still have copies of IRS publication 535 Business Expenses.
Check your local public library.
